Students are here to learn and practice English. The main goal of our English Only policy is to help students improve their English skills by surrounding them in an English environment. We also want all students, from all countries, to feel comfortable with each other. We have an English Only policy so that everyone is speaking a language that all students can understand.   You cannot speak any other language than English at school. If a student is caught speaking a language other than English, that student will be asked to leave the school immediately. The student will not be able to return for the rest of the day.
  • Classes start at 9:00 am. Students arriving after 9:15am must wait until morning break to join class.
  • If students miss more than 3 hours of school a week, they must meet with their teacher to discuss the problem. If attendance continues to be a problem, students must meet with the Director and may be asked to leave the school.
  • Lateness and absence can be excused if the student tells the school before 9:00 am and has a good reason. Students should contact the school by telephoning 905-542-4977 for Mississauga and 204-989-8448 for Winnipeg.
Every student must have medical insurance upon their first day of study. Visiting a doctor in Mississauga or Winnipeg, can be very expensive if you don’t have medical insurance. Heartland International English School, Homestay staff and the host family are not responsible for medical costs if a student gets sick or has an accident.   Students who attend Heartland, must have medical coverage. Heartland sells insurance coverage for $2.25/day. If insurance is not purchased from Heartland, you must show proof of alternate medical coverage.   If you feel sick and would like to see a doctor, please speak to your homestay family or a Heartland staff member. We can go with you to the pharmacy or to a medical walk-in clinic if needed.
Students may take a break from studying. If you want a tuition credit or refund, you must:
  • Tell the school at least 2 weeks in advance.
  • The break must be for a minimum of 5 school days.
  • Provide a reasonable excuse for taking a break.
Application fees, all placement fees, custodianship fees and bank fees are non-refundable.   To apply for a refund, the student must submit a Refund Request Form to the school at least two weeks in advance.   If a student quits or is dismissed from Heartland after the start of the program, the school will refund 50% of the tuition fees that have been paid but not used.   If a student changes from the Intensive Program (full time) to the Semi-Intensive Program (part time), 50% of the difference will be refunded back to the student. The student must give at least two weeks’ notice.   Refunds owing to the student will be paid within 14 days of receiving the Refund Request Form.

Here at Heartland International English School, our is goal is to provide a learning environment where all our students and staff feel safe and comfortable. We do not tolerate any form of sexual, verbal, or physical harassment directed by Heartland staff towards students, students towards Heartland staff, or students towards other students. Any misconduct will be investigated carefully and dealt with promptly which may include dismissal. To avoid potential conflicts of interest, favouritism, exploitation, harassment, or breaches of professional standards, Heartland prohibits romantic or sexual relationships between Heartland staff and students.
