We help you learn English outside of the classroom!

Heartland strives to provide our students with unique and enriching experiences in the city they are learning in.

We arrange weekly activities, allowing students to practice their English skills with Canadians in fun and practical situations, and to explore their new city. We work hard to provide our students with a wide range of activities that cover areas such as sports, tours, events, recreational, cultural, social, arts and history.

Heartland’s staff is also up to date on what is happening in Winnipeg and Mississauga, such as concerts, festivals, football games, baseball games or a Winnipeg Jets hockey game! There is always something going on! Winnipeg is a great city to explore. There are year-round festivals, art galleries, museums, theatres, amateur and professional sports, and much, much more.

Currently while we are offering our courses online, we are continuing to provide culturally enriching activities online!

The stories you will read in the Student Blog are written by students from all walks of life. We hope our blog becomes a place for you, current and former Heartland students, to stay connected to your Heartland family!

    Cut out the Middle-Man

“Cut out the middle-man“Idiom – To deal directly with someone or some entity, rather than dealing with an intermediary of some kind. (https://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/cut+out+the+middle-man) Hello everyone, Thank you for tuning in to my most recent blog post about the journey to ESL learning. This article, in particular, will explain the feeling of being lost in translation and things we can do to overcome it. “You-good” (ni hao) = “Hello” in Chinese?! “How-old-are-you?” […]

    Community

“Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much.” — Helen Keller There are many things that make Heartland special, but for me, one of the most special aspects is the community. From the moment I walked into Heartland, I felt at home. On my first day I remember having technical difficulties […]

    Double Letters

By teacher Jeneen English spelling can be quite difficult! Some people are lucky to speak or learn a language in which words are spelled how they are said. However, this is not the case with English. Much of our spelling requires memorisation due to things like silent letters, double letters, and unexpected letters. Let’s look at […]

    My Favorite Book

Written by Connie Chen My favorite book is Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte. The book narrates the childhood and love story of a British girl whose name is Jane Eyer. Jane Eyer is an orphan. Her parents both died when she was a child, and she was adopted by her aunt, who was ruthless and severe […]

    The past is Another Country

Written by Luis Azevedo “Living is better than dreaming”. This is a verse from a song by a Brazilian singer called Elis Regina and I believe it fits perfectly with the book I just read, *The past is Another Country*. The book presents 12 stories written by new Canadians, people who, for a lot of […]

Written by Nina Chen When I first came to this city, I was hooked on its quiet and peaceful environment. Winnipeg, the capital city in Manitoba, is located in the middle of Canada. It is not a city with a lot of hustle and bustle. There is no big population or famous business here. But […]

Written by Mehakpreet Kaur When I came to Canada, it was the first time I flew in an airplane, and I was obsessed with looking at people’s swimming pools from the sky. But I was nervous because I had never lived without my parents. It was totally a different experience. I flew from Delhi to […]

Overcoming Language Barriers on a Short Trip

Hello, my name is Grace Binas, and I’m the Intermediate 2 instructor here at Heartland. I recently went on a vacation to Mexico with my junior high friend, a trip that had been eagerly anticipated for a long time. This trip felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, that the anticipation lasted longer than my actual stay […]

    Be

written by teacher Jeneen. Let’s think about the verb “be”. It is a small, simple word, but it sure does some interesting things in English! There is not much verb agreement in English compared to other languages (I walk, she walks), but the verb BE is active in this area (I am, you are, he is…). There is […]
